Santa Rosa, CA (May 6, 2019) – National and international trade buyers convened on Friday, May 3 in the heart of Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley at the spectacular MacMurray Estate Vineyards for the Fifth Annual Sonoma County Barrel Auction. Eighty-five “Never Before, Never Again” wine lots handcrafted for this year’s auction raised a total of $645,000. The Sonoma County Barrel Auction has generated over $3.4 million since its inception in 2015. This year’s auction was attended by over 450 guests and featured rare small lot wines ranging from 5 to 20 cases.

These unique wines from Sonoma County’s top vintners and growers were made exclusively for the auction. Each lot was crafted to showcase the region’s highest quality and to express the story of Sonoma County’s diverse grape growing and winemaking styles. Selections included unique single vineyard bottlings, specific clonal selections, blends, wines aged using special barrel regimes and joint lot wines produced by collaborating vintners and AVA groups.

Auctioneer John Curley’s unique style and dynamic energy engaged and entertained the crowd throughout the event. Trade bidders vied for top lots which included Silver Oak Cellars’ “First of Its Kind” 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon which sold for $40,000 and Williams Selyem’s “The West Side” 2018 Pinot Noir at $33,000.

Top lots by case from returning vintners included Benovia Winery, CIRQ Estate, Kosta Browne Winery, Pride Mountain Vineyards, Silver Oak Cellars, Twomey Wine Cellars and Westwood Wines; and from newcomers Chappellet and Crescere; as well as two collaboration lots, one from DuMOL & Laurel Glen Vineyard and the other from Kanzler Family Vineyards, MacRostie Winery & Three Sticks Wines.

“The auction promotes the quality of Sonoma County wines globally, and builds long-term relationships with trade buyers,” said Sonoma County Vintners Executive Director Michael Haney. “We are extremely grateful to the visiting trade and media, our vintner members, AVA and corporate partners, Sonoma County Winegrowers and Sonoma County Tourism for their incredible support of the Sonoma County Barrel Auction over the last five years, and we look forward to welcoming them back for years to come.”

Each year the Sonoma County Barrel Auction gives trade buyers the opportunity to visit Sonoma County, discover new collectibles and hidden gems, and purchase these wines for resale to their clients. Following the event, many of the participating vintners include market visits to winning accounts to showcase the wines to their key customers and collectors.

Sonoma County Wine Auction Raises Record-Breaking $5.2 Million for Sonoma County Charities

Sonoma County non-profit beneficiary partners are focused on literacy, education, health and human services, the environment and arts and culture

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (September 16, 2017) – The Sonoma County Vintners and Barbara R. Banke, the 2017 Sonoma County Wine Auction Chair, are thrilled to announce that the 2017 Sonoma County Wine Auction raised a record-breaking $5.2 million to support Sonoma County charities focused on literacy, education, health and human services, the environment and arts and culture.

Named one of the top charitable wine auctions nationally by Wine Spectator, the Sonoma County Wine Auction was presented this afternoon at La Crema Estate at Saralee’s Vineyard by Visa Signature® and sponsored by Jackson Family Wines and TricorBraun WinePak. The festive philanthropic event was hosted by entertaining auctioneer John Curley, who inspired the energetic and generous crowd to bid competitively.

The auction tent buzzed with excitement with two lots that tied for the top lots of the day: Lot 11 “Winner’s Circle Escape to the Kentucky Derby” donated by Barbara Banke, Stonestreet Farms, and Jackson Family Wines for $210,000 that also doubled; and Lot 23 “Everything is Better with Bette: A Hello Dolly Adventure to New York” donated by Williams Selyem, Dr. Jeffrey P. Hays, and Mrs. Carole Shorenstein Hays which also sold for $210,000 and doubled.

Always a special moment in the annual auction, the highest grossing lot of the day was the Fund the Future lot, which raised $1.8 million for literacy programs in Sonoma County. The Jackson-Banke family kicked-off the Fund the Future lot with a bid of $250,000. This was then quickly matched by the Gallo family and Lytton Rancheria. While supporting a broad range of non-profit partners, Sonoma Wine Country Weekend has made a special commitment to raising literacy rates among children, in an effort to build a more sustainable community. A comprehensive evaluation of the literacy programs supported by Fund the Future shows improved reading levels throughout the county – and increased frequency with which parents read to their children on a regular basis.

“We are grateful to the generous bidders who attended the Sonoma County Wine Auction and enthusiastically supported our beneficiary partners,” said Barbara R. Banke, the 2017 Sonoma County Wine Auction Chair, and Chairman & Proprietor of Jackson Family Wines. “Improving literacy rates among children is the key to building a successful, sustainable community. Our goal is for every child in Sonoma County to be reading proficiently by the third grade and today’s support of our innovative literacy programs was a big step toward supporting that goal. In addition, our Community Grants program changes lives in the areas of health and human services, environment, and arts and culture.”

Shining a light on the caliber of Sonoma’s most highly-regarded and elusive wines, the top wine-only lot today was Lot 19, a six-bottle collection of rare large-format Kosta Browne 2014 single-vintage Pinot Noir, which sold for $37,000.

The day’s festivities also included a special tribute to Rodney Strong Vineyard’s Sommelier Star Program, celebrating 10 years of sommelier sponsorship. The Somm Stars program recognizes the integral role sommeliers play in wine education. “Sommeliers are our guides to wine enjoyment, offering wine selection advice and encouraging exploration. We have and continue to support sommeliers through sponsorships, scholarships, and grants due to our deep commitment to Sonoma County and wine education,” explained Rachel Thralls, Director of Wine Education for Rodney Strong Vineyards. Each year Rodney Strong Vineyards hand-selects an all-star team of sommeliers to support Sonoma Wine Country Weekend by hosting educational wine tours and seminars at Taste of Sonoma and providing dedicated wine service during the auction.

The Sonoma County Wine Auction, as part of Sonoma Wine Country Weekend, is the region’s largest charitable giving event, bringing together Sonoma County’s top winemakers and growers. Since its inception more than $29 million has been raised for organizations that benefit students, children, farm workers, and people in need within Sonoma County.

“We are thrilled with the results of the Sonoma County Wine Auction,” said Jean Arnold Sessions, Executive Director of the Sonoma County Vintners. “We are so fortunate to live in a world-class wine region with such talented vintners and winemakers, who are also committed to caring for our local community.”

Sonoma Harvest Wine Auction Grows, Raising Record-breaking $4.6 Million

Fund the Future Increases so that Sonoma Kids Can Read and Succeed

Sonoma County, CA – Under a tent that transported auction guests from Sonoma to Marrakesh, the 2016 Sonoma Harvest Wine Auction at Chateau St. Jean Winery, sponsored by Visa Signature® and TricorBraun WinePak, exceeded the earnings of prior years with proceeds that totaled more than $4,600,000 at the annual fundraising finale of Sonoma Wine Country Weekend.

Vintners and winegrowers from across Sonoma County hosted 650 guests who raised their paddles high to support the event that will benefit a number of local charities, and continue the Sonoma Harvest Wine Auction focus upon the Fund the Future initiative, a multi-year commitment to improve childhood reading levels across Sonoma County.

Encouraged by Auctioneer Scott Robertson, bidders raised paddles throughout the afternoon which began with ambient belly dancers and a live camel, to win lots that ranged from extremely-limited wines, to exclusive trips and experiences.

The top selling lot of the day, the Two Nights of Hollywood Glamour with a trip to the VIP Golden Globes Party and a Private Film Screening was contributed by Jean-Charles Boisset and Buena Vista Winery and sold for $220,000.

The highest grossing lot of the day, the Fund the Future Lot which supports the Sonoma County wine industry’s childhood literacy initiative, raised over $2,700,000. Dozens of children from the Boys & Girls Club of Sonoma Valley took the stage along with members of Transcendence Theatre Company, inspiring the audience as they performed the moving hit song “Seasons of Love” from the Broadway musical “Rent.”

We need kids to learn to read, so that they can read to learn. If kids can read, they will succeed.”

The top wine-only lot which sold for $65,000 was a collection of 153 magnums of wine, which celebrated the Ladies of Magnum Force, women of the Sonoma wine world that have raised more than $500,000 over the last 13 years.

The top bidders of the day were Joe Anderson and Mary Dewane of Benovia Winery who generously supported the event with several purchases, as well as lot donations and the addition of a group of generous bidders from Southwest Florida. Other visiting bidders from New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma were invited by vintner Robert Kamen.

“The commitment and generosity of our vintner and grower community, as well as the support of so many bidders from near and far, are an inspiration,” said Sessions, “In addition to the donations of wine and incredible experiences, Sonoma vintners and growers have made a firm commitment to fund the local children’s literacy program for another three years.”

“The Sonoma wine community is fortunate to have been able to put Sonoma on the worldwide stage, by working hard to collaborate and give back. Supporting Sonoma County is what Sonoma Wine Country Weekend is all about,” said Cottingham, “Sonoma offers world-class wine and food, in one of the most beautiful, and definitely the most welcoming, wine regions in the world. Year after year, it is truly amazing to see vintners, winegrowers, and bidders give more and more, while still having so much fun!”

The leadership and work of Honorary Co-Chairs, Joe Anderson and Mary Dewane, and Jean-Charles-Boisset inspired the community and the crowd under the tent to generously contribute to this important initiative. Joe Anderson and Mary Dewane also invited the leadership of the Southwest Florida Wine Auction and Chairman of Naples Winter Wine Festival Auction, who purchased several lots throughout the afternoon and generously supported the Fund the Future initiative.

Support for Fund the Future was overwhelming, with a wave of paddles rising throughout the tent for over 20 minutes from 180 auction guests. Attendees stood and cheered at each successive bid. Generous six-figure donations from wine leadership set the pace. Joe Anderson and Mary Dewane and their Benovia Board Members and family pledged their support along with Bill and Eva Price of Three Sticks Wines, Jackson Family Wines, the Gallo Family, and Francis Ford Coppola Winery. Additional contributions from Fred and Nancy Cline of Cline Cellars, the John Jordan Foundation and Tony LeBlanc on behalf of Silver Oak Cellars continued to raise the tally. A flurry of donations ensued and when auctioneer Scott Robertson reached the $1,000-mark, Tom Klein of Rodney Strong Vineyards matched every $1,000 donation up to the sum of $100,000.

The largest grossing auction lot from Hamel Family Wines: “Virginia is for Lovers,” a multi-bid lot for a private dinner at the Hamel Family winery, featuring a menu by Chef Patrick O’Connell and a performance from three-time GRAMMY®-winning musician Bruce Hornsby, raised an impressive $420,000. It was followed by “The Ultimate Super Bowl 50 VIP Experience – Sonoma-style,” a combined lot from Benovia Winery, Kosta Browne Winery and the Super Bowl 50 Host Committee, which raised a total of $320,000, selling twice for $160,000 each. It was followed closely by the Buena Vista and DeLoach Vineyards “French Escape with Jean-Charles Boisset” which sold for a total of $300,000 to two bidders each bidding $150,000.  Other top lots of the day included: “Dinner with the Icons”, which featured dinner with Richard Arrowood of Amapola Creek Vineyards & Winery and Robert M. Parker, Jr.; and Three Sticks Wines’ “Dinner at the Adobe in Sonoma and Fat Duck in London”. The highest grossing wine-only lot was “An Exhibition of Elegance with the Ladies of Magnum Force” which has doubled in size since it was first offered, growing from 70 to 158 bottles and sold for $85,000.

Under the focused leadership and commitment of the Sonoma County Vintners and Sonoma Valley Vintners and Growers joint Board of Directors, Sonoma Wine Country Weekend’s preliminary gross proceeds are expected to be in excess of $5.5 Million, which creates another new earnings record.

“Mary, Jean-Charles and I are thrilled with the auction results today. We are especially grateful to Robert and Kim Kiyosaki, Tom and Kate Klein and the trustees of the Naples and Southwest Florida Wine Auctions for their generosity. Every dollar makes a difference as we boost literacy rates in Sonoma County through Fund the Future.”

~Honorary Co-Chair Joe Anderson, Co-founder, Benovia Winery

“The generosity, energy, commitment, spontaneity and willingness of bidders, vintners and growers to give back to the community was unparalleled. People of many generations, heritages and backgrounds came together to allow future generations to become who they want and are meant to be.”

~Honorary Co-Chair, Jean-Charles Boisset of Buena Vista and DeLoach Vineyards

For those unable to attend this year’s auction, yet eager to participate in the charitable giving, an online auction of additional lots is available that features many of Sonoma County’s finest large-format wine bottles and exclusive wine and travel experiences. It remains open for bidding through 10PM on Friday, September 25.

Sonoma County’s Inaugural Trade Barrel Auction Raises Over $460,000

Santa Rosa, CA (May 2, 2015) — In just two short hours yesterday, a rousing display of energetic bidding on a range of unique Sonoma County wines resulted in a $461,700 fundraising total for the Sonoma County Vintners (SCV) at the inaugural Sonoma County Barrel Auction. The tasting and auction event was attended by more than 250 top trade and media guests and featured rare small lot wines, mostly futures, representing 14 of Sonoma County’s 17 appellations.

“We are grateful for the generosity of our friends in the trade and thrilled to have Sonoma County recognized as a world-class growing region,” exclaimed Carolyn Stark, Executive Director of the Sonoma County Vintners. “The results of this first ever trade auction demonstrate the value of our beautiful wines and we look forward to welcoming our trade guests at next year’s event scheduled for Friday, April 29, 2016.”

The 71 lots of wine created for and sold exclusively at the inaugural barrel auction are some of Sonoma County’s rarest; produced in quantities as small as five cases. Each never before, never again wine was crafted to showcase the region’s highest quality and to uniquely express the story of Sonoma County’s diverse grape growing and winemaking styles. Selections included unique single vineyard bottlings, specific clonal selections, blends, wines aged using special barrel regimes and joint lot wines produced by collaborating wineries.

Two lots tied for the highest bid, each selling for $24,000. The first was purchased by Glen Knight of The Wine House (Los Angeles, CA) and is a barrel collaboration between Joseph Swan Vineyards, Kosta Browne Winery, and Williams Selyem Winery of Russian River Valley Swan Selection Pinot Noir named “The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost.”  The second lot, Williams Selyem Reverence, incorporated seven different heritage clones from 10 of the most prestigious vineyards in the Russian River Valley and was purchased by Drew Goodgame of Porthos Wine Ventures (Sausalito, CA).

Other top earning lots at the auction included Kinsella Estates; Martinelli Winery; a collaboration between West Sonoma Coast Vintners, including Ceritas, Failla, Freeman, Joseph Phelps, Littorai, Peay and Red Car; Patz & Hall; Balletto Vineyards; Paul Hobbs Winery; Pride Mountain Vineyards; Seghesio Family Vineyards; and Francis Ford Coppola Winery.  The highest bid for a white wine at the auction was received by Ramey Wine Cellars.

Highest bidding trade accounts at the event include Robert Merrifield Polo Grill (Tulsa, OK); The Wine House (Los Angeles, CA); Wine Spectrum (Santa Rosa, CA); Wine.com (San Francisco, CA); and Hi-Time Wine Cellars (Costa Mesa, CA).

This year’s successful bidders, all members of the licensed wine trade such as retailers, restaurateurs, importers and distributors, will make these highly-collectible wines available to their customers under the Sonoma County Barrel Auction wine label, which is in the final design stages.
